An Afternoon With…

We are delighted to announce AN AFTERNOON WITH… THE 1975 JOINT SERVICES WEST EAST SAHARA EXPEDITION with Barry Doughty, Phil Maye, and Geoff Renner at the Dunsfold Collection on Saturday, 19 April 2025 at 2pm.

Tickets will be on sale on 24th February on our website.

In early 1975, eight men and four early production Land Rover 101-inch One Tonne Forward Controls set off from London on the Joint Services West East Sahara Expedition. It was the first expedition to cross the Sahara from the Atlantic coast to the Red Sea through the Mauretania-Mali ‘Empty Quarter’. The Empty Quarter presented a very real challenge: a trackless journey of some 1,600km without any means of re-supply.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the successful expedition, team members Barry Doughty, Phil Maye and Geoff Renner will talk about the background to the expedition and what it set out to achieve, as well as sharing their experiences and memories.

This will be the first time that expedition members have celebrated the expedition’s anniversary, and the first time they have come together to tell their stories.

The presentations will be illustrated with photographs taken by expedition leader Squadron Leader Tom Sheppard MBE, accompanied by a showing of the official film of the trip, The Widest Beach in the World, and there will be plenty of time to ask questions at the end of the presentation.

The Collection’s West East Sahara Expedition 101, Tail-End Charlie, which was driven on the expedition by Barry Doughty, will form a most appropriate backdrop during the afternoon.

Join us at the Dunsfold Collection at 2pm on Saturday 19th April 2025. Adults £25 and Under 13s free (one under 13 ticket per adult ticket purchased). Complimentary refreshments will be provided.
