Roger Crathorne spent 30 years trying to persuade his employer to make a Defender in the spirit of the very first Land Rovers built in 1948. He was convinced there would be a ready market for such a vehicle, and we think he was right! It’s a shame the company didn’t have Roger’s vision.
With Defender production set to end, Roger finally managed to find a way to specify the vehicle he wanted. JLR were finally and belatedly convinced that Roger was onto something, and they modified the configuration of the last Defender to come off the line on 29 February 2016 so that it would be similar to Roger’s. The last Defender built, H166 HUE, is now in JLR’s heritage vehicle fleet.
Only ten vehicles separate the last-off-line and Roger’s vehicle, and Roger’s has numerous fascinating and unique details, courtesy of his colleagues on the production line who knew it was his Land Rover they were assembling!
When Roger retired from Land Rover he was presented with the cherished registration mark R90 HUE, and that number was allocated to his 90, and when he decided in 2022 that the time had come to part with this unique vehicle, we felt there was no better home for it than the Dunsfold Collection, which Roger has been a dedicated supporter of for many years.
