Registration number: R210 FRW

Engine type: 2.5 300 TDi Diesel

Gearbox type: 5 Speed

Vehicle spec:
This Defender Wolf XD is the prototype for a project known as ‘Winter/Water’ to enable a fleet of 686 vehicles to be capable of wading to a depth of 1.5 metres in salt and fresh water. The vehicles were also to be capable of operating in temperatures down to minus 46C, achieved by fitting a fuel heater and radiators in the rear.

The switchgear is housed in sealed compartments covered by transparent bags and a roof escape hatch was provided. The vehicle was designed to fill with water to allow traction at all times. A raised air intake was fitted along with transmission breathers and preparation for full submersion would take about an hour.

The trials were carried out by ATURM (the Amphibious Trials and Testing Unit, Royal Marines) at Instow in Devon and in the Arctic Circle.

This Wolf was retained by Land Rover until 2006 as a reference vehicle.
