This vehicle was donated to us in early 2025 by the National Brewery Heritage Trust Limited, a charitable trust that is dedicated to protecting and preserving Britain’s brewing heritage. The vehicle is a 1963 export-specification 109-inch that was converted by Worcester-based Carmichael & Sons Ltd to their Redwing specification.
The vehicle was allocated when new to the famous Springfield Brewery in Wolverhampton, where it served until 1994 when the brewery closed. Included with it was a Sigmund trailer-mounted auxiliary pump which is believed to have served alongside the 109 at the brewery.
The Springfield Brewery opened in 1873 after William Butler and Company had outgrown its existing site at Priestfield in the southeast of Wolverhampton. In 1960 Mitchell’s and Butler’s acquired the company and kept the Springfield Brewery open. Brewing ceased in 1991 and the main brewery building Grade II listed the same year.
The vehicle and trailer are in wonderfully original condition with all their equipment and hoses present and correct. The Series IIa has covered a recorded 4,685 miles.
