Brian Scarlin Bashall 1928-2016
Sunday 20th November 2016
Brian Scarlin Bashall died peacefully in hospital earlier today. Brian had many interests including boats, motorcycles, military vehicles, vintage tractors and pre-war Bentleys. But it was his love of Land Rovers that led him to establish The Dunsfold Collection in 1968.
From the early 1950s, Brian was a keen member of the Southern Land Rover Owners' Club and regularly attended and organised off-road trials. He and a group of friends later launched the All Wheel Drive Club, which was to become the largest off-road club in Europe.
In parallel, Brian continued to rescue every prototype, rare or unusual Land Rover that he came across, and the Dunsfold Collection grew rapidly. For his pioneering work in saving Land Rover history, Brian was presented with the Transport Trust's Lifetime Achievement award in 2003.
Land Rover enthusiasts everywhere have much to thank Brian for, and his legacy is maintained today by his sons, Chris and Philip. We at the Collection - Trustees, Friends, Supporters and Volunteers - extend our sincere condolences to Brian's family.
